How is India defined and composed?

The nation has two official names - India and Bharat. (article 1)

India is a union of states, including the states, union territories, and any other territories that may be acquired or admitted. (article 1)

The Parliament of India is authorised to (article 2, 3):
  1. invite new territories to the union
  2. form a new state by
    • uniting two or more states
    • uniting two or more parts of different states
    • uniting a part of any state with any other state
  3. increase or decrease the area of any state
  4. alter the boundaries of any state
  5. alter the name of any state
