The nation has two official names - India and Bharat. (article 1)
India is a union of states, including the states, union territories, and any other territories that may be acquired or admitted. (article 1)
The Parliament of India is authorised to (article 2, 3):
- invite new territories to the union
- form a new state by
- uniting two or more states
- uniting two or more parts of different states
- uniting a part of any state with any other state
- increase or decrease the area of any state
- alter the boundaries of any state
- alter the name of any state
