In the previous article on Consumer Disputes, we understood the situations in which a Consumer Complaint can be filed, who can file a Complaint and the process to be followed when the Consumer wishes to file a Complaint offline. In this article, we will look at the step-by-step process to follow in order to register a Complaint online. Let us get right into it!
Step #1: Visit the Government of India’s official website
of the Department of Consumer Affairs. The URL link to be followed is https://consumerhelpline.gov.in/.
Step #2: On the site, you’d be able to see various options for filing your dispute. In order to register a complaint using the website, you would need to register on the website as a new user. Scroll down till you arrive at a space in the front page that looks similar to the screenshot. You can register on the website by clicking on the ‘Signup’ option here.
If you are an existing user, you can log in to the website by clicking on the ‘User Login’ option available at the top right corner of the website.
Step #3: After entering your details on the User
Login/Signup page, click on the Sign In option which is available in both
forms. The details to be provided during Signup include name, gender, mobile
number and email address.
Step #4: Once you’ve signed up and clicked on the Sign In
option, the site will take you to the grievance filing system. Here, you can
start entering details about the complaint you have.
Each of these columns is mandatory to be
filled in order for the complaint to proceed. However, if you are unsure about the
nature of your complaint with relation to the columns, you can always leave it
as ‘Select (column detail)’.
You will find that the form includes
the option of giving the details of the seller or service provider to
facilitate any future proceedings. The same also provides a text box in which
you can explain the problem that you faced in your own words. Last but not the
least, the form allows the consumer to attach up to 3 product-related
documents. If you find that you have more than 3 files, you may merge the
product files and then attach them. If you find your files are larger than the
allowed size of 5Mb, you are also permitted to attach files that have been
manually compressed.

Step #5: Finally, after confirming the details included in the form, click on ‘Submit’.
Congratulations! You have successfully
filed a Consumer Complaint. You would have received a message from the site
confirming the same along with a number assigned to your complaint which you
must take note of for any future proceedings. The same will also be available
in the email address that you used for registration.
